One Sunday morning thirty-five years ago our folks were reading the paper in their home in Raleigh.  A for-sale-by-owner classified ad they saw in that paper began a decade’s long love affair with a very special part of the world, and a very special piece of property.  They bought it, and we have called it “The Farm” ever since.  Our folks are both gone now, so with much sadness on us kids parts, it is now time for this special place to pass along to be loved and enjoyed by others.

The Farm consists of an old house and 14.7 waterfront acres in the small community of Gloucester, on the mainland behind and facing Harkers Island.  It is roughly 20 minutes to Beaufort by car.  The land is comprised of 4 parcels and about 834 feet of waterfrontage.

The House

According to research we just did, the house was built in 1865.  Think what the world was like in Eastern NC at that time!  The house has 3 bedrooms and one bath, and is roughly 1343 square feet.  There is an original fireplace, and fantastic old heart-pine flooring throughout.  There is a wide, screened in porch that faces the water and is the perfect spot for enjoying a cool drink at the end of the day.  The roof is in good shape, the gas-pack heating system was replaced a year ago.  The well is good.  There is a dining room and an eat-in kitchen and the house has been just repainted inside and out.  You’ll want to budget for a kitchen makeover because that part of the house has not changed since we bought the place.
